Visual Storytelling

Course Purpose

This course introduces students to the methods and tools of storytelling, from single image to full sequential storytelling. Concepts like story structure, composition, visual structure, staging, camera, development of story structure, verbal story telling skills, pitching, story sense and understanding story and character progressions will be covered. Illustrating the narrative, to visualize and tell the story, planning shots, drawing panels to demonstrate action and maintain continuity between scenes of an animation requires a thorough understanding of layout, composition, sequential drawing and editing. Effectively create image/s to support and communicate the emotion of a story. Students will learn the underlying fundamentals of visual storytelling. Through assignments and lectures beginning with the foundation of story and story concept through to more complex ideas in short and long form animation. With practical application students will develop their Storytelling by creating storyboards and making short animatics. Assignments will be critiqued in a process similar to work done in an animation studio.

Course Goals & Outcomes

This course focuses on the specifics of storyboarding as a storytelling medium focusing on storyboarding for Animation, Film and Game development. Students will explore the elements that contribute to the final production of Professional storyboard, everything from commercials, series televisions shows, computer games, and feature films. Areas covered will include concept, thumbnails, shot setups, camera angles, blocking, staging, transitions, character posing, composition, design, art direction, background design, pacing and editing.

Course Activities

Story Concept
Introducing Students to the basic concepts of story and storytelling, especially for short film.

Illustrating and envisioning a story through pictures, in essence visually directing the film is what Storyboarding entails. Introduced to Visual Storytelling by examining the principles, terminologies, artistic concepts and cinematic techniques the students will learn what is necessary to create clear, concise and engaging storyboards of professional industry standards. In addition to rendering the visual artwork of the storyboard, students will create video Animatic’s in which to gain the knowledge and skills of timing, pacing, cutting and editing using Industry standard software.
Final Project Concept
In the final two Terms students will learn the procedures in the planning and execution producing 1 complete animated production integrating all 3 of the components of the 3D Program, Animation / Modeling / VFX. During this part of the Visual Storytelling course students will gain additional advanced instruction and to create 3 professional quality storyboards for their final projects, through a series of lectures, exercises, pitches and critiques.
