Visual Development

Course Purpose

Using fundamentals learned from the Composition, Perspective, Layout and Character Design courses, this advanced course will prepare the students for further exploration into the principles and theories of Visual Development. The knowledge and skills required to create and envision the “look” and style of a film. Main areas covered will include Colour Design, Digital Image Creation (Photoshop) and Art Direction. Developing an understanding of Mood, Atmosphere, Anatomy, and architecture; the ability to work in different mediums and the versatility to conceptualize visually in a variety of techniques are all essential skills to have from concept to final art.

Course Goals and Outcomes

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental principles of design and color theory. Students will learn industry specific software titles that will enable them to enter the field with experience in order to become a valuable part of any design team.

Course Activities

Colour Design
The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the fundamental principles of design and color theory. Students will be introduced to the principle concepts of design such as layout, composition, and balance as well as the theories of color and how to use color creatively. These concepts will be presented in theory as well as reinforced through specific practical exercises and activities that will serve to demonstrate how each of the concepts is integrated into good design.

Digital Design (Photoshop)
Essential software required for most courses and positions in Animation. This course introduces the students to Adobe Photoshop for Animation Production especially in the areas of Character Design / Storyboard / Colour Design and Visual Development. The main objective of this course is to teach students how to develop technical and creative skills using Photoshop. Through this hands-on course, the student will learn additional fundamentals of design in a digital medium.

Art Direction
With the skills and knowledge students obtained from the Perspective and Composition Courses students will explore advanced Visual Storytelling principles by combining this knowledge in the area of Art Direction. Creating the visual style of the film and the ability to manipulate emotions with design, composition, staging color and designing believable and relatable characters that relate to their environment is all Art Direction. These ideas and the principles of Colour / Texture / Composition / Staging will be explore
