Monologues

Course Purpose:

In the Monologues Module, students will be exposed to classical and contemporary playwrights as a context within which to study text and performance.

Course Goals and Outcomes:

Some of the specific skills students will develop during the Monologues Module are:

  • Creating memorization technique
  • Analyzing text
  • Executing extensive character research
  • Utilizing wardrobe, props and make-up to enhance performance
  • Creating characters with detailed physical and emotional life
  • Performing in front of a live audience
  • Utilizing voice and movement to interpret text
Course Activities:

Students will work with a variety of exercises to breakdown the script to its basic elements of plot and character. They will use various approaches to creating backstory and subtext for their characters and will be lead through a process designed to fulfill the creative requirements asked of actors on a professional theatre production. In addition they will have assignments based in the technical theatre crafts that they will also need to fulfill.

In addition, once the ensemble has been created, specific performance texts will be selected and provided to the student or requested of them to purchase.

Supplies and Equipment:

Supervised access to the theatre and lighting equipment will be provided by the school during the performance of the Monologues. Students are required to bring the following with them to classes: 3” binder with paper and 8 tabs, notebook, pen, pencil, highlighter, and a water bottle.
